A United Community Stands for the Future of Bongin Bongin Bay

There are moments in a community’s story that signal a turning point. Moments where people from different backgrounds come together with a shared understanding that something deeply valuable is worth protecting.

The recent Solutions Summit on the Future of Bongin Bongin Bay was one of those moments.

More than fifty representatives from across the Northern Beaches community gathered to take part in a powerful and constructive conversation about the future of one of Pittwater’s most biodiverse coastal environments. What unfolded was far more than a meeting. It was a demonstration of what community leadership, collaboration and collective care can achieve.

The summit brought together an extraordinary cross-section of voices: young environmental advocates, Northern Beaches Councillors, marine scientists, recreational fishers, local recreational fishing clubs and representatives, including Underwater Skindivers and the Fishermen's Association, environmental organisations, local advocates and residents — all contributing a wealth of knowledge and passion to a shared vision for the future of Bongin Bongin Bay.

Importantly, this was not a conversation dominated by one perspective. It was a room built on diversity of experience, knowledge and connection to place.

Representatives from fishing communities whose histories date back to the 1800s sat alongside conservation advocates working to protect marine ecosystems. Organisations dedicated to ocean protection joined local residents who have spent decades living beside and caring for this coastline. Together, they demonstrated that the future of Bongin Bongin Bay cannot and should not be shaped in isolation.

For Friends of Bongin Bongin Bay, the summit reinforced a principle we have long believed in: meaningful environmental protection begins with genuine community consultation.

Local knowledge matters.

Community voices matter.

People who live near, care for and interact with this coastline every day hold critical insight into the environmental, cultural and social significance of Bongin Bongin Bay. Any conversation about its future must include those voices at the centre of decision-making.

Collaborative Efforts Driving the Solutions Summit

What made the summit particularly significant was the willingness of attendees to move beyond division and toward solutions. The discussions were thoughtful, respectful and future-focused – grounded not in conflict, but in a collective desire to protect the ecological health, cultural value and community identity of this unique part of Pittwater.

The challenges facing our coastal environments are growing. Increasing environmental pressures, population growth and changing patterns of coastal use mean that the need for strong, collaborative stewardship has never been greater.

But the summit proved something incredibly important: our community is ready to step forward.

Ready to listen.

Ready to collaborate.

Ready to act.

This gathering was the beginning of a broader movement toward shared responsibility and long-term protection for Bongin Bongin Bay.

Friends of Bongin Bongin Bay remains committed to ensuring this momentum continues. We look forward to ongoing collaboration with community groups, environmental organisations, decision-makers, scientists, fishers and local residents as we work toward meaningful, lasting outcomes for our coastline.

Because the future of Bongin Bongin Bay does not belong to one organisation, one stakeholder group or one generation alone.

It belongs to all of us.

And together, we have the opportunity – and the responsibility – to protect it.
